Defensive Coaching Staff

Defensive Coordinator Mike Cordes is in his second season on the Simpson staff. Cordes comes to Simpson from NCAA Division II Wayne State (Neb.). Cordes will be the defensive coordinator and will serve as the special teams coordinator. Cordes was a member of the Wildcats' staff for the past three years where he was the defensive back coach and special teams coordinator. In 2005, Cordes' special teams at Wayne State were first in the Northern Sun Conference in kickoff coverage, allowing just 11.3 yards per kick return. WSC also ranked first in kickoff returns with a 20.7 average. Cordes began his coaching career at the University of South Dakota where he was a graduate assistant and worked with the defensive backs and linebackers. Cordes began his playing career at Wayne State in 1997, making 73 tackles. Transferring to Nebraska-Kearney in time for the 1998 season, Cordes lettered three times for the Lopers, helping Kearney win a Rocky Mountain Conference title and earn a spot in the 2002 NCAA Division II Football Championships as a senior. Cordes ended his career with 243 tackles and 12 sacks. He earned first team All-Conference honors as a senior and was chosen second team All-Conference as a junior.


Defensive Line - Paul Davis is in his seventh season as the defensive line coach at Simpson College.  Davis is in his second year with the program after a one-year sabbatical.  During his first stint with the Storm, four Simpson defensive linemen earned six All-Conference awards with Jason Ripke earning All-American honors in 2004 and 2005.

Davis came to Simpson from Drake University where he served in a similar position during his two stints with the Bulldogs (1993-94, 1996-2001).  Drake won two Pioneer Conference Championships (1998, 2000) during his tenure.

Prior to joining the Drake staff, Davis served as a coach at Carlisle High School from 1987-92 during which time Carlisle qualified for three state tournaments.  Davis has also served as a the Iowa Conference representative to the AFCA Assistant Coaches‚ Committee.

An Iowa State graduate, Paul and his wife Susan have two sons, Tim and Kevin.  Paul and Susan reside in Carlisle, Iowa.


Defensive Secondary - Jordan Davis is in his second season as a member of the Simpson staff.  Davis was a four-year starter for the University of South Dakota where he played for Simpson head coach Jim Glogowski.

As a senior in 2006, Davis was a first team AP Little All-America and Daktronics first team All-American.  Davis was also named the North Central Conference‚s Most Valuable Defender as a senior.  He made 167 tackles (114 solo) in his career.  Davis charted eight career interceptions and 14 career pass breakups.

Davis has played professionally in the Arena Football League for the Kansas City Brigade and in the AF2 for the Quad City Steamwheelers and Iowa Barnstormers.
